Helen Emma (Wondra) Matyas

Helen Emma Matyas, age 95, died March 10, 2023 at her home at the Cedars of Austin.  Helen was born September 4, 1927 in Montgomery, MN to Frank and Emma (Tuma) Wondra.  She grew up in Montgomery and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1946. On July 3, 1948, she was united in marriage to Francis E. Matyas at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague, MN.  The couple lived in Cedar Rapids, IA until 1956 when Francis was transferred to Austin, MN as a sales representative for Nabisco.

Helen was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church and the VFW Women's Auxiliary.  She enjoyed helping whenever needed at the church.  Helen worked for 23 years at the Austin Clinic Pharmacy.  She loved gardening and working outside.  Helen owned many dogs over the years.

Survivors include her daughter, Michele Hacker - Nancy, KY, son: Thomas Matyas - Austin, MN, four grandchildren: Sarah, Mike, Betsy and Steve, eight great grandchildren.  Helen is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister: Dorothy Peterson and brother: Milo Tuma.

There will be visitation on Monday, March 13, 2023 at Mayer Funeral home where friends may call from 4:00pm-6:00pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 am on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at St. Edward's Catholic Church with Father James Steffes officiating.  Visitation at church begins at 9 am and interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery at a later date. 

Memorials are preferred to Mower County Humane Society.
