Walburga A. Hatten, age 103, of Austin, died Friday, January 17, 2014 at Sacred Heart Care Center. Walburga was born October 31, 1910 in Bancroft, Iowa to Joseph and Mary Rahe. She went to school at St. John’s Catholic School in Bancroft, and after graduation went on to primary training. In 1936 she married Arnold Hatten at St. John’s Catholic Church. They started their married life farming, which they did in Iowa until 1948 and then moved to the Austin, Minnesota area and continued farming until 1976. Walburga was a homemaker all of her life raising 11 children. In the 1960’s she went back to her teaching career at Queen of Angels Catholic School and taught for 13 years. She was active in anything that involved family. Whether it was playing games, cards, or especially ball games after supper and before dishes were done. Her hobbies included quilting, glass work, and crocheting. Walburga and Arnold loved family. As a couple they loved to travel whether it was from Pennsylvania to Arizona, to Washington State, and all points in between. Walburga spent many hours working with her flowers, glass work, and quilting until 2005 when she moved to an apartment in Brownsdale for a couple of years before moving to Sacred Heart Care Center in 2007. Survivors include three daughters, Alice (Richard) Jensen, Dexter, MN, Barbara Mensink, Rushford, MN, Margaret Sprick, Lake City, MN, five sons, Phil (Sarah) Hatten, Brownsdale, MN, David (Pam) Hatten, Chandler, AZ, Joseph (Lucille) Hatten, Leighton, PA, Donald (Cheryl) Hatten, Brownsdale, MN, Daniel Hatten, Brownsdale, MN; daughter-in-law, Judi Hatten, Maple Glen, PA; son-in-law, Roger Schramm, Gordon, WI; 37 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Boever, Bancroft, IA; two sisters-in-law, Dolores Kaproth, Foley, MN, Kathleen Stade, Boulder, NV; nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; two daughters, Janet and Georgia; a son, Gene and a son-in-law, Russell Mensink. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 am on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 4 pm CCW rosary on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-7 pm and also one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice. Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com
