Walter Robert Marreel, 94, of Austin, died on Thursday, January 22, 2015 surrounded by his loving family, at Comforcare in Austin. Walter was born on January 14, 1921 to Hector and Herminea (Parmentier) Marreel, on their family farm near Carpenter, IA. After his schooling, Walter worked on the farm with Hector until Walter enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. During a short leave, Walter ended up meeting his future bride, Dolores Davis, at the Terp Ballroom. He and Dolores were married on January 16, 1946 in Wilmington, DE. Walter was honorably discharged from military service and moved back to Minnesota with Dolores. Walter worked for the George A. Hormel Foods Company starting in 1951. He also worked for Wagner Construction and other various part-time jobs. He retired from Hormel’s in 1982. Walter was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, horseback riding, and following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Walter loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Family gatherings were very important and he rarely missed them. Walter is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dolores of Austin; children, Janet (Robert) Douty of Rose Creek, Mark (Laurie) Marreel of Rochester, Roseria (Michael) Webeck of St. Charles, Mary (Steven) VanZee of Apple Valley, Michael (Sharon) Marreel of Owatonna, Madonna (Bob) Rosel of Rose Creek, Tim Marreel of Austin, John Marreel (Deb Arneson) of Rochester and Dan (Laura) Marreel of Austin; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Walter is preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, 3 sisters and a grandson, Dustin Rosel. A Funeral Mass will at 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Fr. Dale Tupper officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 11 am until the time of the funeral at Queen of Angels. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Rose Creek. Military gravesite rites will be performed by the Austin American Legion Post #91.
